Empowering West Virginia's Youth: DoHS Unveils Vital Life Skills Training

In a significant move to bolster the transition of youth from foster care into adulthood, the West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS) has introduced an enriched life skills training program. The recent announcement of 22 new transitional living facility beds strategically placed across the state signifies DoHS's commitment to equipping young individuals with essential life skills as they navigate the journey from foster care to independence.

Guided by qualified adults, these youth actively participate in crafting personalized transition plans and skills assessments within the Transitional Living (TL) facilities. The eligibility criteria for Independent Living Subsides (ILS) and Education and Training Vouchers (ETV) underscore the importance of academic, vocational, or employment engagement, emphasizing the critical role life skills play in shaping a successful adulthood.

Crucial support services, including assistance with school applications and financial aid, are provided by MODIFY case managers. Oversight, guidance, and life skills training are extended through agencies managing the Transition to Adulthood Program across various counties, emphasizing the significance of instilling life skills in the young population.

Recognizing the pivotal role of life skills in fostering successful transitions, former foster youth are eligible for medical coverage up to age 26, and the Foster Youth to Independence Initiative (FYI) offers housing vouchers for those at risk of homelessness. To reinforce the importance of life skills education, supporters can explore curated resources, including a life skills curriculum and youth workbooks, available on my website. Together, let's empower West Virginia's youth by imparting the crucial life skills they need for a brighter future!
